A high-risk pregnancy is a pregnancy that has a greater chance of complications or problems for the mother, the baby, or both. There are many factors that can make a pregnancy high-risk, such as:
1. Advanced maternal age (being 35 or older)
2. Pre-existing health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease
3. Obesity
4. Multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.)
5. History of recurrent pregnancy losses
6. History of preterm births (Incompetent cervix, structural abnormalities in the uterus or birth canal, etc)
7. History of genetic disorders in family
8. History of previous baby with anomalies or aneuploidies
9. History of intra-uterine deaths or still born babies
10. Exposure to certain infections or toxins
Women with high-risk pregnancies may require more frequent prenatal care and monitoring, including additional testing such as ultrasound, amniocentesis or fetal echocardiography. They may also need specialized care from a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, who is an obstetrician with advanced training in managing high-risk pregnancies.
It’s also important to note that even if you have a high-risk pregnancy, most women will have healthy babies. With proper care and monitoring, many potential problems can be identified and treated early, reducing the risk of complications.
If you have any concerns about your pregnancy, it’s best to speak with your healthcare provider. They can help you understand the potential risks and what you can do to minimize them.
